ESPN BET has ceased operating in New York. The shutdown follows the November 6, 2025 announcement that Penn Entertainment and ESPN had mutually agreed to end their sports-betting partnership early, roughly two years into a 10-year naming-rights deal. Penn has folded the ESPN BET userbase into theScore Bet, the wholly owned brand it gained when it acquired theScore in 2021.
For New York customers, that means the ESPN BET app and accounts have transitioned to theScore Bet, which continues to operate under Penn's existing New York mobile sports betting license. The state's licensed-operator count is unchanged — one brand simply replaced another.
What Changed for New York Bettors
Existing balances, bonuses and account history were migrated to theScore Bet rather than cashed out. New Yorkers who used ESPN BET should expect to log in through theScore Bet going forward. The other major New York books — FanDuel, DraftKings, Caesars, BetMGM, BetRivers, Fanatics, Bally Bet and Hard Rock Bet — were unaffected.
Why the Partnership Ended
ESPN BET launched in November 2023 as Penn's high-profile rebrand of Barstool Sportsbook (Penn had divested Barstool back to founder Dave Portnoy in August 2023). Despite ESPN's marketing reach, the book never captured the market share Penn had targeted, and the two companies agreed to part ways rather than continue the arrangement. Penn is now concentrating its sports-betting efforts behind theScore Bet.
